Century of Dravidian Revolution

One of the 1967 Election promises of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was the assurance to supply one measure of rice for one rupee through Public Distribution System. Initially this promise was partially fulfilled by implementing it in Chennai and Coimbatore cities. Now the present DMK government also fulfilled its election promise of supplying rice Rs.2 a kg. and subsequently made it Re.1 a kg. in the footsteps of Arignar Anna.

The one hundred and second year Anna birthday celebrations are being conducted throughout the year in towns and villages involving thousands of boy and girl students participating in different competitions revealing their skills of clear and expressive speech. These year-long celebrations will provide the younger generation an opportunity to get to know the basics of the evolution of the Dravidian movement and the crusade that followed to establish social justice and implement welfare measures.

Periyar the doyen of social revolution who sowed the seeds of rational thinking led to a new and enlightened way of life. The pervasive prevalence of his ideas and ideals form the basic doctrine of the silent social revolution that took place in Tamil Nadu. Anna the versatile genius is the torch-bearer of Periyar’s social philosophy and path breaking original thoughts.
One hundred and one years elapsed after Anna’s birth. In those days the credit of bringing politics to the common man on the street goes to Thanthai Periyar and Arignar Anna. They spoke to the masses in the language of the people.

Kalaignar took the lead from Periyar and Anna. While Periyar was sincerely sowing the seeds of rationalism among the gullible masses who were intoxicated by the religious fanatics, he purposely avoided contesting elections. He was preparing the people for a social revolution; contesting in elections will sidetrack the people from the main task. But Anna thought differently; he felt that the long years of preparatory spade work among the people and party cadres will go waste if the ideals are not made into laws and given the legal force. Hence the DMK decided to contest the elections with the clear mandate of the people and the partymen.
After Anna, Kalaignar shouldered the colossal task of translating almost all the socio-political ideologies and economic thought into action. It is this triumvirate of the Dravidian family who are the perpetrators of the transformation of the contemporary Tamil society.

It is apparent that the DMK, the performing real Dravidian Party had effectively utilized the Twentieth century to appear the Tamil society as it is today.

We shall, therefore, proudly claim that ‘Twentieth century is the century of Dravidian Revolution.’
