Don’t cause disgrace to departed leaders!

Commenting on the controversy that had arose following the move for naming of the new domestic terminal after MGR, DMK President Kalaignar said the government must move in such a way that there were no confusions or difference of opinion whatsoever while naming something after an acclaimed leader of Tamil Nadu.
In his epistle to cadre on April16, Kalaignar referred to the resolution adopted in the TN Assembly for naming of the second domestic terminal of Chennai airport after MGR with the support of all parties including the DMK and recalled an incident in February 1990 when he requested the then Prime Minister V.P.Singh at a public meeting on Marina beach to name the terminals in Chennai airport after Anna and Kamarajar. Immediately V.P.Singh contacted top officials in the capital over hot line on the dais itself and announced the naming of domestic and international terminals after Kamarajar and Anna respectively. The names were still in vogue.
Following this the ADMK government took efforts to name the second terminal of modernised domestic airport after MGR and as per the communication of Civil Aviation Minister the Assembly resolution was adopted. Although the DMK welcomed the resolution, we could not but think over how MGR in his last days opined about Jayalalitha and how those in power now criticised him. But they had now undergone a change of mind which was comforting, he said.
In the issue of 1.1.1989, of ‘Makkal Kural’ daily the editor TRR published as it was what MGR told of her that she was cunning and dangerous trying to outdo him, she was very bad and won’t hesitate to do anything and use anybody for her purpose. MGR’s opinion about her that it was his mistake to have seated her in a position over and above her calibre and he could no longer tolerate her using his name in many places, in the issue of ‘Anna’ daily on 22.1.1985.
It was MGR who brought her to politics and gave many responsibilities. He was the reason for her to come to this level after him. It was he who made her a member of Rajya Sabha and made her known all over India. But in his last days he was so vexed with her that he vent out his resentment in these dailies.
When a film city was formed in Chennai by the State government, the film world expected it to be named after MGR or Sivaji Ganesan and placed a demand accordingly. But she didn’t listen to them and named it after herself. But after the DMK came to power it was renamed after MGR and still it existed.
While speaking at a film industry function at Madras University Centenary Auditorium on 16.4.1989, he announced an award in the name of MGR which was still presented. On 31.8.1989 the inauguration of TN Dr.MGR Medical University and foundation laying function for the university buildings were conducted. But as the DMK government was dismissed after the Party came back to power in 1996, the building works were expedited and on 31.7.1998 the then Vice-President Krishankanth inaugurated the Rs.6 crore university buildings and He (Kalaignar) unveiled the statue of MGR at the entrance.
In the budget for 1989 funds were allocated for construction and beatification of MGR memorial on Marina beach and it was designed like an umbrella reminding MGR providing help and shade to many and he inaugurated  it on 15.11.1989 during DMK rule. Kalaignar said. When the ADMK opposed it, speaking at that function P.H.Pandian said, “It is regrettable that there is a condition in TN in which anything good done in politics is vulgarised. Only one person is opposing this function. I don’t want to even say the name. Being the Speaker of the Assembly,  I know some truths. The person who thrice tried to bring down Puratchi Thalaivar (MGR) from power is now trying to dislodge this rule. Does the person requires such a living?”. This is still available in the old issues of dailies.
It was such Jayalalitha who had changed herself now and had come forward to name a portion of the airport after MGR.
In the letter written in her own handwriting about MGR and sent to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi she had stated, ”The root cause of everything that is happening here is that the CM is terribly jealous of my popularity. He cannot stomach the fact that I have become so popular. So he is doing everything possible to eliminate me from the political scene and from public life…MGR himself who does not want to give me due importance, does not want to induct me into the Cabinet. No one here can really dare to oppose him for without him they are zeros.” It is to be welcomed that such a person had come forward to do this.
But according to information available to us, there could be only two terminals in an airport. The domestic terminal has already been named after Kamarajar and it was in vogue. The extension now done was only for domestic terminal. Another name for it was a little bit confusing. “This question is raised not only by me, but also by those who have great respect for Kamarajar,” he said.
In the issue of ‘Deccan Chronicle’ daily on April16 under the headline “Naming wars- Passengers say airport already named” it was reported:- “What’s in a name? this is what passengers and airport officials asked when this newspaper tried to find out their reaction for the State Assembly’s resolution to name the new domestic terminal after former Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran. ‘Where is the question of naming the terminal again, when it is already named? The domestic terminal-1 at Chennai airport has been named after former C.M. Kamaraj and we have just added another terminal (II) to it. so, where does the question of renaming the extension crop up? It will only add to the confusion’ said a senior airport official”.
The government should ensure that there was no confusion or difference of opinion while using the names of reputed leaders and heartily welcomed by all sections, Kalaignar said.
