Humbug of enquiry commissions

Following the strong exception taken by the Madras High Court to the appointment of an enquiry commission headed by Justice Reghupathy to probe the Maulivakkam building collapse, DMK President Kalaignar cited the news published in the biweekly ‘Junior Vikatan’ along with a photograph of Justice Reghupathy along with his family with Jayalalitha, explaining the fate of enquiry commissions appointed by her regime.
It stated, “In 2001, the affair of midnight arrest of Karunanidhi purportedly for corruption in the construction of flyovers was staged. To enquire into it Jayalalitha set up a commission headed by Justice Raman during ADMK regime. Till the last the report of this commission was not released. In the previous ADMK regime, Venkatesa Pannaiyar was killed in police encounter and a commission headed by Justice Raman was set up. This report was also not released till now. During the DMK rule in 1996-2001, the construction work of Chennai Perambur flyover halted in between. Contending corruption in the construction of Perambur flyover, she appointed Justice Arumugam enquiry commission. Even after the judge submitted his report to the government it was not released. Thus appointment of commissions remains only as eyewash. The Justice Reghupathi commission appointed in 2011 regarding irregularities in New Secretariat complex is still not over. But the amount allocated so far for this commission is Rs. 95.79 lakhs”. This has been published in ‘Junior Vikatan’ as a box-news, Kalaignar said.
