On the founding day, Kalaignar recalls the arduous path traversed by ‘Murasoli’

If publishing a political and ideological periodical was difficult in those days bringing it regularly as a daily without any break in spite of trials and tribulations for 72 years is indeed a stupendous task. Having successfully accomplished this task, DMK President rightly took pride in recollecting the arduous path traversed by the daily ‘Murasoli’ founded by him in 1942 on its founding day August 10.
In his epistle to party cadre on the day, Kalaignar briefly recapitulated the founding of ‘Murasoli’ and the trials and tribulations faced by it in these 72 years of its existence. He said it was on this day 72 years back that ‘Murasoli’, hailed by all as his first child, was started on 10.8.1942. on that day, this daily, supported with interest by his brothers and sisters in Tamil Nadu now, was first released as a pamphlet in Tiruvarur. In the beginning it was published as a monthly in thousands of copies and sent to branches of the Dravidian movement. From the donations mobilised by the cadres of branches ‘Murasoli’ was published as pamphlets and developed the party even as the party developed it. Murasoli also was the source for developing his art of writing. Now ‘Murasoli’ has many writers but he is life-time permanent writer. ‘Cheran’ was his pseudonym. In the beginning its secretary was Thennan and Treasurer T.S.Gopal-both are not alive now.
Kalaignar recaptured the contents of the ‘Murasoli’ pamphlet he issued 70 years back on 5.10.1944 under the heading ‘Varuna? Or Respect?’, for the benefit of youth now. It was an appeal to spirited cadre of the Self-respect movement to rally to Chidambaram for protesting against the ceremony for establishing the order of Varunas.
The golden jubilee of ‘Murasoli’ was conducted on Aug 10, 1992 at Anna Arivalayam presided over by Perasiriyar, welcome address by Murasoli Maran and he released golden jubilee souvenir.  He offered shawls to his friend Tiruvarur Thennan, who was helpful to him when he started it, Karunai M.Jamal, proprietor of Tiruvarur Karunanidhi Printers who printed it then, manager in the early days C.T.Murthy, Murasoli Sornam and manager Periyannan.
In his speech, General Secretary Perasiriyar announced the decision taken in the meeting of district secretaries in the morning to found a trust for continuing to run ‘Murasoli’. V.P.Singh sent a letter in his own handwriting and signing in Tamil felicitating the function. In a poem he wrote for the souvenir dedicating to his parents, Periyar, Anna and those who greeted him, Kalaignar said and recalled the contents of greetings message of Perasiyar.
In these 72 years of the growth of ‘Murasoli’ there were languor but its head never hung. It had been of assistance to him in his works and the reason for its growth was the party cadre who carried it as the sword and shield in carrying on the party.
In these 72 years there were so many political events, family events, party events. So many political turning points, periods of happiness and bitterness- ‘Murasoli’ was well acquainted with this climatic changes. It traversed through trials and tribulations, ever standing in battle field crossing through wild streams and winning over wild animals, he said citing one incident for it.
As the young leader of India Rajiv Gandhi contested in the rival alliance in the 1991 general elections, the ADMK goons and anti-socials incited the workers of that party who were mourning the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and utilising that critical time, entered into and ransacked the houses and offices of DMK cadre. Most parts of ‘Murasoli’ office was burnt by such evil forces. The old files safeguarded for long burnt to ashes and many vehicles parked there were set on fire. On hearing the news, Kalanidhi Maran, who was then looking after Murasoli office, took a scooter kept in front of his house and rushed to the burning office but could not enter and that scooter was also set on fire. The machines were so damaged that the daily could not be printed. It is such ‘Murasoli’ which our opponents thought finished its chapter now continued performing its service.” On this good day, my affectionate request to the party brethren is that they should continue to heap their support as ever to my first child ‘Murasoli’ stepping into 72nd year”, Kalaignar said.
