“DMK is the only party genuinely interested in development of youth”

The DMK was the only party genuinely interested in the welfare and progress of the youth, party Treasurer Thalapathi M.K. Stalin said in Coimbatore on June 22.
Addressing students at a function organised by the DMK Youth Wing Trust to distribute prizes to State rank holders in the 2014 Class X and Plus-Two examinations on the occasion of the 91st birthday of Kalaignar, he said the party when it was in power had implemented very many schemes for the welfare of students. When not in power too, the party, through its various wings, had encouraged students. The distribution of prizes to rank holders was one such.

He said the reason for Thanthai Periyar, Arignar Anna and Kalaignar did not come together for politics but for using politics and political power for the development of the country and ensuring the progress of people, particularly those from the backward and oppressed communities. He wanted to remind the youth their struggles and sacrifices for the cause of these sections.
The party when it was in power was the first to issue orders for free education of girl students, it had brought in the single window system for admission to professional courses, introduced special schemes for first graduates in a family to pursue higher education and introduced the 15 per cent reservation for rural students in higher education.

It was the DMK that introduced the fee waiver in higher education courses for State rank holders, he pointed out.
Stalin said that the students should not construe the DMK Youth Wing Trust’s initiative as a political move. The distribution of prizes was only aimed at encouraging students to excel in academics. While it was apolitical, the party wanted the students to be politically and socially aware and work for the nation’s development.

The other reason behind encouraging students was also because development of students would lead to the development of nation. The party had always believed in this right from the days of Periyar and Anna. It was their vision that the party implemented through various schemes for the welfare of students.
Unlike in the past, the Trust was giving away prizes only to State rank holders as it did not have the financial wherewithal to give away prizes to district rank holders. However the fixed deposit amount in the Trust’s account would be further increased and prizes for district level rank holders would be resumed, he assured.
In the sixth year of such prize distribution, the amounts of prize money have been increased for the first prize from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25,000, the second prize from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 15,000 and third prize from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 10,000.
This year, the Trust gave away Rs. 56.20 lakh to 469 State rank holders in Class X and Plus-Two examinations.
Thus far, it had given away Rs.1.98 crore to 3,328 students.
Stalin sought to win the hearts of youngsters by spending hours together with top scorers in the class X and Plus Two examinations.
Apart from distributing cash prizes at the function held in Chinnapalayam, Stalin had his photos clicked with all the 469 participants from morning till afternoon. What surprised the participants most was the party functionaries handing them over the printed photographs within a few minutes.
Sundar Babu, a resident of Tirunelveli and the father of Rose Mary who secured the State second rank in the SSLC exam by scoring 498 marks, said, “It was a great opportunity for our family members to get themselves clicked with the leader. It’s only because of my daughter’s hard work that we got this opportunity.”
According to K Duraisamy, of Kinathukkadavu, a long time DMK activist and the father of D Haritha, who scored 498 marks in SSLC to secure the second rank, “I have been a member of the party for the past two decades, but this is the first time that I got an opportunity to be near Thalapathi Stalin.”
According to S Mohanapriya, a student from Madurai, “Stalin congratulated and advised us to make it big in the plus two exams too. I will show the photos to my friends and neighbours.”
The DMK arranged for the transportation, food and accommodation for the parents and students, who had come to attend the ceremony from across the State, at a marriage hall near the venue.
