Kalaignar condoles demise of Rama Narayanan

DMK President Kalaignar condoled the death of veteran director and producer Rama Narayanan who died in Singapore on June 22 following a brief illness and said that his memory was neither forgettable not changeable. He was 65 years old and is survived by a son.
In his condolence message on June 23, Kalaignar said,
“I was very much shocked on learning the demise of my dear younger brother director Rama. Narayanan in Singapore. As producer, director and story writer in Tamil film world he worked for many films and became famous, contested as DMK candidate in Karaikudi constituency and served well for it and exceptionally served as Chairman of Tamil Nadu Iyal, Isai, Nataka Mandram during DMK rule. Undergoing treatment as in-patient in hospital during the last few months for kidney problem, when Rama. Narayanan met me two weeks back and apprised about his illness and treatment, I did not think that he will pass away so soon. In the order of luminaries offered by ‘Chettinad’ to film world A.V.Meyyappa Chettiar, Lena Chettiyar, Kavignar Kannadasan and AL. Srinivasan, Rama Narayanan directed 128 films and obtained lasting fame. Rama Narayanan was personally affectionate to me. He was loyal and firm on DMK and its objectives and maintained discipline all through his life. His memory is neither forgettable nor changeable. Besides conveying my deep condolences to the bereaved family members and friends of the film world, I shall try to console myself.”
On June 24, Kalaignar placed a wreath on the body of Rama Narayanan at his residence in Chennai. He told reporters outside that Rama Narayanan was in close contact with him and worked together in politics and movement. “I can’t even think of art world without him. My only anxiety is whether anybody with the heart for sacrifice and service and movement consciouness will be available to fill the void left behind by that dear comrade”, he said conveying his heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members, friends and comrades of art field.

Veteran: Narayanan has directed 128 films in nine languages in a career spanning 36 years. In the 1980s, he was known as a director who specialised in commercial films, while most of the films he made in the 90s had devotion and spirituality as the underlying theme.
Considering his experience in the field, it came as no surprise for most in the industry when he was elected the head of Tamil Film Producers’ Council for three consecutive terms. Narayanan was also elected MLA from Karaikudi in 1989 and the chairman of Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram in 1996.
“His demise is a great loss to the film fraternity,” said actor R Sarathkumar, who heads South Indian Film Artistes’ Association. “On several occasions, I have had the opportunity to meet him.
He was always warm to everyone. He was well-respected for his work and liked by all,” he said.
Narayanan, who hailed from Karaikudi, started his career in Chennai as a lyricist before penning dialogues for films. He and his friend M A. Khaja wrote dialogues together under the pseudonym Ram-Rahim.
Known to be a close associate of DMK chief Kalaignar, he made films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Bengali, Oriya and Malay. For his 50th film, Veeran Veluthambi, Kalaignar wrote the story and dialogue.
