Expressing his anguish over the continuing attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Lankan naval forces, DMK President Kalaignar urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold talks with Sri Lankan regime and find a permanent solution for the issue.
In a statement on June 24, Kalaignar said, “The incidents of Tamil Nadu fishermen being arrested by Sri Lankan naval forces, chasing away, taking them to Sri Lanka and lodging in prisons, extending detention and destroying the boats and nets of fishermen are continuing like a serial. As against the expectation that with the change of regime at the Centre and after our Prime Minister Modi met Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa, a full stop would be placed for these issues, incidents were occurring.
Over 300 mechanised boat fishermen of Jagathapatnam in Pudukottai district went to sea on 23.6.2014 for fishing. When fishermen of 10 boats among them were fishing southwest of Kodiakarai, Lankan naval forces in three vessels of Lanka have encircled the boats of Tamil Nadu fishermen. Though fishermen of 7 mechanised boats escaped, 11 fishermen in 3 boats were arrested by Lankan naval forces and taken to Sri Lanka. Hence the fishermen in Jagathapatinam are agitated.
Besides them on 18th last 7 Nagapattinam fishermen were arrested and kept in Lankan prisons. Even before that 46 Tamil Nadu fishermen are still languishing in Lankan prisons. Besides urging the Centre, particularly Indian Prime Minister to take suitable action for the immediate release of these 64 fishermen, Prime Minister Modi should hold talks with Lankan regime for finding a permanent solution to prevent prolonging of this atrocity”, Kalaignar said.
