Belittling women!

The list of Hindu religious leaders asking Hindu women to reproduce more is getting bigger. The latest to add to this list is the Shankaracharya of Badrikashram, Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati, who said Hindus should have 10 children.
Speaking at the Megh Mela in Allahabad, the head of Jyotirmath (Badrinath) in Uttarakhand said: “It is because of Hindus’ unity that [Narendra] Modi has become Prime Minister. In order to maintain their majority status, every Hindu family should give birth to 10 kids.”
He also justified the “ghar wapsi” (re-conversion) programme of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal, and claimed that “it is from the Hindu religion only Christianity, Islam and Sikhs have originated.”
“Everyone must return back to their roots ... There should be no ban on ‘ghar wapsi’ and no legal action must be taken against change of religion,” he added.
The children issue, which was recently raised by BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj, who had asked Hindu women to have four children, is refusing to die down.
A BJP leader from West Bengal on Jan 19 also raised the same controversy by raising the number to five -- so that Hindus don’t get “extinct”.
“I have only one request... Every Hindu mother and sister will have to produce at least five children,” said Shyamal Goswami, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s vice president in Birbhum district.
This came following a statement by Union Minister of State Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti using abusive language during a public meeting.
The Minister had said: “Aapko tay karna hai ki Dilli mein sarkar Ramzadon ki banegi ya haramzadon ki.” (You have to decide if you want a government in Delhi to be led by the children of Lord Ram or illegitimate children).
How can man decide on the quantum of children he wants as it is the woman who have to undergo the pain and agony for nine months and the trauma of childbirth especially at the time of delivering the baby? Therefore, if at all anyone has the right on how many children a female can reproduce it is them and men should shut their big mouth for now. Are Hindu women machines that produce babies?
First prevent the malnutrition deaths of thousands of kids in India, and then ask the people to produce more. If you can’t protect the kids being born what right does one have to demand more?
Thankfully, he did not advice to follow Dhridharashtra in Mahabarath to parent 101 children. Dhritarashtra by his wife Gandhari had 100 sons and one daughter (Dussala by name). He had another son by name Yuyutsu through a Vysya woman.
The need of the hour for the country is population stabilization, and not statements against. The Congress lead governmentt in the year 1992 introduced a bill on “Small family norm” in the Parliament, stipulating an aspirant contesting elections to the Parliament to observe two child norm. Once passed, this is automatically applicable to all levels. The NDA government may consider the bill again, which will be a law and stops all such statements.      25 January 2015
