Asserting that the DMK would never bow to anybody and compromise policies and stating that the BJP was more cunning than ADMK’s Jayalalitha, DMK President Kalaignar said the people should be watchful against the BJP attempting to gain foothold in Tamil Nadu by deceiving them with attractive measures.
Addressing the DMK General Council meeting on Jan 9 at Kalaignar Arangam in Anna Arivalayam in Chennai, Kalaignar said he was proud in welcoming and meeting district party secretaries and members of the executive committee and general council. Those who had emerged victorious and could not win in the party elections from the grass root level to the higher levels all together have defended democracy and guided others. Perasiriyar explained the speciality of the DMK and its strength. The undercurrent of his speech was Dravidian, rationalist and self-respect consciousness.
When Kalaignar referred to Treasurer-elect Thalapathi M.K.Stalin having acquired maturity to guide the party there was thunderous claps from the audience and hence he jocularly said “it seems you had no confidence in Stalin till I said this and you clap only after I said. But I have developed confidence in him not just now not even after Perasiriyar said today, but even before seven or eight months when referring to Stalin, I said ‘toil-toil-toil.. its name is Stalin’. Now you have realized the nature, strength and superiority of his work. His toil has not only strength and all-encompassing nature but also softness. It is that quality of softness that all of us have to preserve. We all together have to strengthen and grow the movement by combining simplicity, affability and softness. The important issue we have to discuss in the General Council is the pledge that we have to take”, Kalaignar said.
He said in the morning, he was doubtful of participating in this meeting because early in the morning his health suddenly deteriorated threatening him. However he came to the General Council with the determination what if he lost life for this good action. His only thought was to meet all and speak to them.
Stating that the big responsibility of leading the party has to be borne by all of us, Kalaignar spoke about the nature of people in the party. He referred to Sarguna Pandian, whom he knew from her childhood and she grew into a proud lady of the movement and about four months back underwent a life-saving surgery. All of us and party comrades stayed in the hospital and saved her life. We never thought that she would come back healthy and today conducted the headquarters elections here. “How could she get this distinction? The tears she shed, sacrifices she made, the dynamism she exhibited brought her this glory. I say this because if those in this movement- whether they are men or women- sincerely work without giving room for selfishness and only with the aim of common good and ready for any sacrifice will not be given up by the movement and reward them, they will get the same distinction that Sarguna Pandian got today”, Kalaignar assured.
Saying that we had been fostering family bond in the party since its founding and now we were discussing about alien forces intruding into this movement. Perasiriyar spoke about the threats to our language. About himself, Kalaignar said ever over 60 years back as a young boy, he developed interest in Dravidian movement and associating himself on rationalist path. We follow the path laid by Thanthai Periyar and leaders of Justice Party for getting rid of social and economic disgrace and being prepared for any sacrifice.
“Some politicians, like astrologers sitting under banyan tree, are reading horoscope for us telling that the DMK has no future because of the electoral defeat. We are running this movement not believing in horoscopes but believing us. This is not said out of arrogance. It is because we have the determination to sacrifice even our life for the sake of the movement”.
So many tried to destroy the DMK and root it out but their efforts did not yield and it would never yield benefit for them. “Some people who have descended newly from somewhere carrying huge publicity banners think of destroying it. We have underlined in our resolution today. The resolution of the General Council stated that the BJP, considering the DMK casually and scheming to destroy it. The scheme came to the street and despite their adopting so many tactics they have realized that it is not possible. The DMK has faced many attacks and oppositions but we have succeeded in the race. We will never face defeat. They came to destroy DMK first in Tamil Nadu and made moves. When it did not work they heaped hundreds of attractive schemes to cover people and people were only deceived. I frankly say, the BJP regime has taken foothold. In this regime there are schemes to deceive people of Tamil Nadu. To say further, those who have come to power now at the Centre are more cunning than Jayalalitha and hence we should not get duped by them”, Kalaignar cautioned.
The resolutions underlined that we in the DMK would never yield to anybody and compromise our policies and principles. If such a situation developed, we would get destroyed along but would never agree to allow destruction of the policies. Because the policies and principles of the DMK were so sacred and upholding them we would never give up them and not prepared to surrender to somebody and sell out ourselves as slaves, Kalaignar asserted.
We have lot of youths to fulfill out pledge to consolidate and protect this movement started as Justice Party, shone as self-respect movement, and sacrifices rendered by Thanthai Periyar, Arignar Anna, Pattukottai Alagirisamy and others, still many were coming. Their enthusiasm was overflowing and should be used to further grow this movement. “Let us protect the respect of Tamils. We have consolidated and protected our liberation movement creating a sentiment for the very word Tamil Nadu. That should not be allowed to wither and though Tamil Nadu could not be immediately achieved, let us consolidate and protect our movement with true affinity for the party, nation and language and swear to protect Tamils and Tamil language”, Kalaignar said and completed his speech.
Earlier, charging the BJP-led government at the Centre with indulging in communal politics, DMK General Council appealed to various political parties and movements in the country to bury their regional and political differences and confront communal forces.
In a resolution, the party accused the Union Ministers and leaders of Hindu outfits like RSS and Hindu Maha Sabha of making controversial statements, including referring to Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse as a patriot, and attempting to install his statues across the country. The resolution slammed BJP for observing Christmas as Good Governance Day.
Such actions would destabilize peace and tranquility in the country, the resolution said. The party criticized the Modi government for deviating from its path of development agenda. The saffron party also faced flak for its effort to impose Hindi and Sanskrit in schools across the country.
In another resolution, DMK charged that Jayalalitha was running the state government by proxy. The party would hold a massive rally to the Raj Bhavan, demanding that a commission of inquiry be instituted to probe the irregularities committed by the ADMK regime.
The party criticized the government for failing to sort out inter-state water disputes, maintain law and order and control prices of essential commodities. 18 January 2015
