“Fortunately, at least Thanjavur palace was spared”

Reacting to reports of burglary at Thanjavur palace in which 14 articles including a spatika (crystal) lingam, maragatha lingam, ivory articles and bronze knives were stolen, DMK President Kalaignar taking a dig at the law and order situation in the state under ADMK regime, said people must be happy that at least the palace was spared by the burglars.
In his question-answer column in ‘Murasoli’ on April 24, Kalaignar, replying to a question on this burglary, said the incident reflected the law and order situation under this regime. In three days, there were reports of a patient in Chennai Government General Hospital was killed inside the premises, two VCK activists were murdered when they came to a police station in Nagapattinam district and a lady higher official’s chain was snatched while coming for duty to DPI complex in Chennai. In that series 14 antique articles under protection in Thanjavur palace were stolen.
Commenting on the non-functioning Chennai Corporation, he cited a RTI reply obtained by an activist according to which, most of the works announced under Ward Councillor Constituency Fund in 2012-13 were not completed. Last year, works planned by the Corporation were 640, out of which administrative clearance was given to 617, tenders called for 597 works, tenders finalised for 397 and works completed only 77, works that were not at all started 215. When the situation was so awful, new projects for 2013-14 had been announced.
Asked about the interview of Dr.Rani of Tiruchi, who had alleged that an ADMK MLA married her as second wife and cheated after taking jewels and money, that even after 538 days of her complaint and on-going trial in the court, the police were still to file charge-sheet and if there were any danger to the lives of her and her children it would be because of the ADMK MLA. “Let us hope that the Chief Minister replies to the charge on ADMK MLA and the delay caused by the police while she replies on the demand for grants for police department”, Kalaignar said.
Noting that of late dailies had started publishing reports obliquely about the state of schemes/ projects announced by the ADMK regime, Kalaignar said contracts for the ultra modern luxury bus plan announced by the ADMK regime last year were held up at the initial stage itself due to increase in the rate of indirect commission demanded by the higher officials. The same reason held good for this year’s plan for buying additional buses. “We don’t know what the officials will say if they are asked”, Kalaignar said.
Refuting the contention that the State government had to bear higher grants for selling rice at Rs.20 a kg, Kalaignar said this scheme was nothing but procuring rice at Rs.19 per kg from the Open Market Sales Scheme of the Central pool of the Union government and selling at Rs.20 to people.
Defamation case against CNN-IBN channel had been filed for their telecasting an imaginary news cartoon in which the reporter of that channel was shown asking Jayalalitha how she was treating Tamil Nadu, for which she was shown replying, “Like a Proprietor”.
Asked about the ADMK government’s reply for his detailed statement on Thirumazhisai satellite city announced by the regime, Kalaignar quoted the reply of the minister of the department for the debate for grants, “On 8.9.2011 Chief Minister Puratchithalaivi Amma announced the project for setting up Thirumazhisai satellite city. On the basis of this, appropriate order was issued for setting up a satellite city with 12,000 flats at an estimate of Rs 2160 crore”. 19 months after the CM announced this project, the action taken by this government was only ‘issuing appropriate order’. This one evidence for the state of announcements made by the CM in ADMK regime was enough, he added.
