It is years since people had watched Indian News Review, the publicity film of the Government of India, which was mandatory for theaters to screen before the start of the film for which the audience would be waiting. Whether it was the visit of the President or the Prime Minister to any foreign country or floods in some part of the country or the death of some prominent person, the background voice was dispirited and without any modulation adding irritation to the restless viewers waiting for the main film of their choice to be screened. Their disenchantment was echoed in thunderous clap of hands pressurising the operator of the projector to run the news reel faster and start the main film. The present younger generations are fortunate in not undergoing the horrendous experience.
But after several years, to the dismay of film-goers they are now being administered the same bitter dosage of nuisance by the publicity-crazy regime of megalomaniac Jayalalitha. A publicity film on her “achievements” in two years are forced to be screened in theaters. This film with the title ‘Ore Kaiyezhuththu” (Just one Signature) ‘records’ how all she had changed the ‘fate’ of Tamil Nadu with just one signature of her.
In the first scene, she distributes free mixie, grinder and fan to beneficiaries. Below that frame Jayalalitha’s signature shines on the screen with graphics and DTS effect. Next laptops for students, free rice…..at last they show up to the inaugural function of Pennycuick statue. In between her signature and smiling face are shown with special effect. If all these are news ‘reel’ shown by the ADMK government, now what is shown here is the news ‘actual’ that this regime do not show. This is the past history behind the ‘just one signature’ of Jayalalitha, that is now claimed to have done wonders in Tamil Nadu…
v It was just one signature of Jayalalitha that dismissed and sent home nearly two lakh government employees overnight.
v For the only reason that they were appointed during DMK rule, 13,500 makkal nala paniyalargal were removed from service with just one signature of Jayalalitha.
v It was just one signature of Jayalalitha which banned customary animal sacrifice in temples and after devotees rose up against the regime it was withdrawn with just one signature of Jayalalitha.
v In the TANSI land case she made a somersault in the court to claim that those signatures on the purchase documents were not at all hers and later her claim disproved in forensic analysis was also the same signature of Jayalalitha.
v In spite of knowing well that filing nominations for elections from four constituencies was against Election rule, it was Jayalalitha’s signature which signed nomination forms from four constituencies for Assembly elections in 2001 and got them all rejected by Returning officers.
v Much against well reasoned advices on the Constitutional impropriety of assuming office of Chief Minister in the face of her conviction in TANSI case by the Madras High Court, it was the same signature of Jayalalitha that was appended on the oath of secrecy etc. after swearing-in in 2001, only to be removed from office by the Supreme Court later.
v The letters written to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi complaining about MGR and requesting him to remove ‘her political mentor’ from office and anoint her were also written in the same handwriting and signature of Jayalalitha.
…..there are much more ill-fated incidents in the past relating to just one signature of Jayalalitha. Now, removing Sasikala from ADMK and shuffling and reshuffling government and police officials, ministers and party functionaries and keeping everyone on guessing is also just a signature of Jayalalitha. Indeed, the ‘fate’ of Tamil Nadu now pathetically hinges on the whimsical signature of Jayalalitha!
